This is an informational passage and assessment on the life of Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Holy Roman Emperor. Also known as Charles the Great, he was a powerful medieval ruler who was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day, 800 AD. Charlemagne united much of Western Europe under his rule, promoting education and Christianity, and he is remembered for his military achievements and efforts to revive learning during the Carolingian Renaissance, leaving a lasting impact on European history. This passage is written for Grade 7-10 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc). This “printable/no prep” resource includes:
