This is the story of the origin of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, the national anthem of the United States. In 1814, Francis Scott Key, an American, witnessed an attack of Fort McHenry by British forces. Key was relieved to see fort uncaptured and the American flag still proudly flying the next morning. Inspired, he wrote a poem which later became the lyrics for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” This passage is written for Grade 5-8 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc). This “printable/no prep” resource includes:
1) An engaging and informative 1000-word passage titled “Francis Scott Key and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The text explains the story behind Key’s poem, which became the national anthem of the United States in 1931.
