Item description

Use a sound wall in your classroom to help students improve their reading and spelling by having them focus on the articulation of sounds. This resource includes a sound wall with mouth pictures to support students as they build connections between phonemes and graphemes.

You can use these bright and colorful cards to start a sound wall from scratch or reorganize your existing word wall and make it a more efficient resource for your students! Rather than sorting and displaying words by initial letter you can sort them by sound instead.  This makes it easier for students to locate those tricky words that follow rules they haven’t learned yet.

This Resource Includes:

  • 47 Cards for your Sound Wall with Mouth Pictures that you can use in a variety of ways. Set up a sound wall or word wall that will support your students’ literacy development in a way that makes sense to them. (Please note that this set has 49 cards in total but only 47 cards have the added mouth visual).
  • 49 Cards with Graphemes that you can use alternatively to show students the common and not-so-common spellings (graphemes) of each sound.
  • Sound Wall Headers with Articulation Terms and Phonics Terms to help you organize your sound wall. You can choose the version that works best for you and your students.
  • Sound Wall Title Letters you can print and cut out to display with your sound wall.
  • 10 Different Color Options for Headers and 8 Color Options for Title Letters so you can customize the look of your display.

There are two versions of sound cards in this set for you to choose from. You can choose one or the other or use a mix. Both sets include an anchor image that features the sound and the phoneme. Set 1 includes sound wall cards with mouth pictures and set 2 includes cards with lists of graphemes.

Pro Tip: Keep a mirror or two by the sound wall so the kids can look at themselves as they say the word and find the card/group that matches!

Please note that these cards represent sounds and not letters. For example, instead of an “x” card there is a “ks” card and instead of a “q” card there is a “kw” card.

Phonics Headers Included:

  • Short Vowels, Long Vowels, Consonants, Schwa, Digraphs, Diphthongs, R-Controlled Vowels
  • Articulation Headers Included:
  • Stops, Liquids, Nasals, Affricates, Glides, Fricatives, Consonants, Vowels, Vowel Valley

This set works great if you follow the science of reading!

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID…

⭐️⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kaitlin M. says, “One of my favorite purchases I have made. It is a great extra resource to have on my wall to help students when having difficulty remembering how to sound out different words.”

⭐️⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amanda W. says, “My students always look at the wall to help them spell, which is a bonus for me so they don’t ask me how to spell as much.”

⭐️⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sarah R. says, “I am so happy I switched to a sound wall this year. It has been a wonderful resource for my students. I see them using it daily. Definitely recommend!”

Why I Love this Resource

I created these cards for my own classroom (and yours!) because I wanted students to be able to utilize the word wall as a resource during writing. Word walls feature many words with uncommon spellings and pronunciations that may be unknown to our students. It is very challenging for a child to locate a particular word if it includes graphemes they haven’t yet learned!

For example, if a child wants to spell the word phone, they might sound the word out /f//o//n/ and look for the word in the F section of a typical word wall (because that is the letter they associate with the first sound they heard). But they wouldn’t find the word there. That’s because the word begins with the letter p.

It is my hope that these cards help my students (and yours) to easily locate and learn these tricky words.
