This poetry unit will inspire your classes with an atmosphere that reinforces writing skills yet encourages literary playfulness. “Writing a Narrative Poem” focuses on mood, organization, and literary devices while encouraging the high-order thinking skills necessary for composing a narrative.
In some ways, the compositional complexities of writing poetry surpass those required of prose. As a result, many young authors feel incapable of mastering this form of writing. However, poetry is an ideal genre for teaching students to amplify meaning, evoke a reader’s emotion, and adhere to well-defined structures. Because of its length, it reinforces the importance of word choice, helping some students overcome wordiness.
Unlike lyrical poetry, a narrative poem focuses on a story plot rather than emotion. Therefore, it is less daunting for writers. It assists students in developing their voices while providing opportunities for creative expression. Equally important, it allows youth to learn while having fun. Students who master writing skills in this and other creative endeavors easily transfer them to the more academic writing required by standardized testing.
This resource is ideal for homeschooling and writing stations. Aligned with Common Core, it requires no teacher preparation and includes a peer-editing form and rubric.
